QUEENS, NY — The New York Mets will have third baseman and designated hitter Mark Vientos back in the lineup on Thursday, as announced by manager Carlos Mendoza before Wednesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.
“We need to consult with the trainers to determine if he requires a rest day after consecutive games or if he’s ready to play for us,” Mendoza said.
Vientos, sidelined since June 3 due to a hamstring injury, played nine innings at third base on Tuesday for Triple-A Syracuse and returned to the position on Wednesday before being taken out after three at-bats.
His return is timely for a struggling Mets offense that has had little contribution from the bottom of the lineup during a tough losing streak of 10 out of 11 games.
“Our lineup’s bottom half is struggling to create opportunities,” Mendoza commented after Monday’s loss to the Braves. “We rely heavily on the top hitters, and when the bottom players can’t get on base, it hampers our ability to score runs.”
After a previous season with 27 home runs, Vientos has found consistent performance challenging in 2025. In 53 games, he was slashing .230/.298/.380 (.678 OPS) with six home runs and 21 RBI.
Despite this, Vientos offers more potential than Jared Young, the left-handed DH hitting .171 this season. Brett Baty, who has mostly covered third base recently, was hitting .153 in June as of Wednesday night.
