Despite their 4-3, extra-inning win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night, the New York Mets are facing the potential loss of Mark Vientos for an extended period. The third baseman and designated hitter injured his hamstring while running out a grounder to short in the top of the 10th inning. He stumbled and fell shortly after leaving the batter’s box and could not reach halfway up the first baseline. He carefully walked off the field, holding his right hamstring.
Vientos, emotional after the game, told reporters (via MLB.com) that he was “not sure” about the injury’s severity, even after undergoing tests following his exit. The results are expected later on Tuesday.
Manager Carlos Mendoza provided a bleak outlook. “It didn’t look good,” he said. “He’s undergoing all the testing, and we have to wait and see.”
The 2025 season has been challenging for Vientos, who emerged last year and claimed the starting third-base role with 27 home runs and an .838 OPS in 111 games. This year, in 53 games, he is hitting .230 with six home runs and a .678 OPS.
If Vientos misses significant time, Brett Baty will take over the starting role at third base. Once the organization’s top prospect at that position, his struggles led to Vientos overtaking him and sending him to the minors in 2024. Since a brief demotion, Baty has performed well, hitting .288 with an .889 OPS, five home runs, and 16 RBI in his last 22 games.
The left-handed Jared Young and the right-handed Starling Marte are expected to share the designated hitter duties.
