Macau’s Economy and Finance Secretary, Tai Kin Ip, updated on the satellite casino closures, highlighting steady staff transitions. Around 1,600 employees from six closed casinos have been reassigned to other properties by their concessionaires. The closed casinos include SJM’s Grandview, Legend Palace, Casino Casa Real, and Emperor Palace, along with Galaxy’s Waldo and Melco’s Grand Dragon. During a Policy Address debate, Tai mentioned the closures are managed step by step, and the 1,600 staff have returned to their concessionaires smoothly.
Four more satellite casinos will close soon, affecting approximately 3,200 more employees. The government has dedicated teams and hotlines to assist staff, with 29 consultation cases so far, none requiring further intervention. Tai stated the government would actively engage with operators to ensure a smooth transition for employees to their concessionaires.
Currently, five satellite casinos remain operational in Macau. SJM recently announced it would acquire L’Arc for HK$1.75 billion (US$225 million) while abandoning plans to purchase Ponte 16, which will close on November 28. The operational casinos also include Landmark, Kam Pek Paradise, and Fortuna, which will close on December 10.
Tai emphasized the government’s focus on minimizing disruptions for employees during the final phases of the satellite casino closures.
