Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson has received medical clearance to resume football activities after recovering from a fractured tibia and fibula, marking a major step forward in his return to the field.
Hutchinson couldn’t hide his enthusiasm about rejoining his teammates and getting back to work.
“I’m rolling with the boys now and it feels like I’m back to being myself again,” Hutchinson shared on Thursday. “I’m really looking forward to the season. I think this is the most excited I’ve been for OTAs in my life. This has been the longest I’ve gone without playing, so I’m pumped.”
The 24-year-old defensive star confirmed he experienced no setbacks during his rehabilitation, allowing him to steadily progress and rejoin the team. The injury, which occurred on October 13 during a game against the Dallas Cowboys, cut short a season in which Hutchinson had been producing at a high level.
Before going down, Hutchinson had amassed 7.5 sacks in just five games — the most through that stretch by a Lions player since William Gay in 1983 — and was considered a serious contender for Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Despite the impressive early-season performance, Hutchinson believes he’s only scratched the surface of his potential.
“A lot of people think that might’ve been my ceiling, but I really believe I’m still on the rise,” he said. “I’m 24, still a young dude, and I don’t think that was my peak.”
Hutchinson’s return adds a key component back to Detroit’s defense as the team looks to build momentum going into the upcoming season. The Lions are hoping his presence will help propel them deeper into the playoffs and continue their upward trajectory in the NFC.
