Light & Wonder has achieved a minor victory in its ongoing conflict with competitor Aristocrat Technologies. A court in Nevada issued a favorable decision, leading to a surge in the company’s shares.
Court Defends Light & Wonder from Aristocrat’s Demands
Aristocrat had previously filed a lawsuit against its rival for allegedly misappropriating trade secrets, which led to the withdrawal of one of its games. However, Light & Wonder has maintained its position, which has proven beneficial in this instance.
The US District Court for the District of Nevada initially issued a preliminary injunction requiring Light & Wonder to cease its Dragon Train games across the US. It has now shielded the company from Aristocrat’s attempts to access the math models behind its competitor’s games.
Aristocrat claimed that Light & Wonder’s Dragon Train games had improperly used vital trade secrets and argued that access to the math models would clarify the situation.
However, the US District Court for the District of Nevada rejected this motion, stating that Aristocrat must precisely define the trade secrets it seeks to protect before making such a request.
The Battle Has Been Won But the War Continues
While this ruling represents a solitary victory in the larger conflict with Aristocrat, it positively impacted Light & Wonder’s stock. Shares rose, reaching $94.66 each shortly after the announcement. As of this writing, the company’s shares are trading at $94.48 per share.
This event underscores continued shareholder confidence in the company despite ongoing legal obstacles. This contrasts an earlier decline in Light & Wonder’s share price after Macquarie suggested that Light & Wonder might face litigation by Aristocrat.
Nevertheless, the main battle lies ahead. As the trial nears, many analysts agree that there’s still a significant risk Light & Wonder could lose the case. The trial is set for 2026 and will ultimately resolve the Dragon Train issue.
Meanwhile, representatives from Light & Wonder and Aristocrat are expected to meet and discuss the recent ruling, as required by the US District Court for the District of Nevada.
Light & Wonder’s Momentum Remains Strong
In other developments, Light & Wonder continues to gain momentum in Australia despite the lawsuit. JPM analysts recently expressed optimism about the company’s future in the country, considering its rapid growth and numerous new installations.
Separately, the company recently released The Wizard of Oz – Follow the Yellow Brick Road. This is the second game in The Wizard of Oz series, following the success of the first game. Like its predecessor, The Wizard of Oz – Follow the Yellow Brick Road will be available exclusively at BetMGM Casino in select markets.
