The tourism agency leader, Steve Hill, acknowledged the current subdued demand, noting that resorts have temporarily suspended resort fees to enhance short-term appeal. While this strategy might help somewhat, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s chief warns it likely won’t significantly alter the situation in the upcoming weeks. Visitor numbers are down by 6.5%, with 1.15 million fewer people visiting Las Vegas through May.
Summer demand appears sluggish as well, with Las Vegas experiencing the second-largest hotel occupancy decline, just behind Houston. “The recent months haven’t been as favorable, and there’s a slight downturn, as everyone can see,” Hill commented, reflecting on the current state and foreseeable developments.
Beyond visitation, revenue per room has decreased by 14%, which Hill pointed out might be the more critical metric. He compared recent events to historical crises like September 11 and the Great Depression—an unsettling analogy. Fewer visitors have also led to lower gaming revenue.
Hill addressed the job market, recognizing the stress among workers. “The top of the market remains stable, but nationwide, people worry about their jobs and finances, causing hesitance,” Hill noted.
He also discussed businesses’ resilience to such challenges, mentioning that the top market segment remains largely unaffected. They continue attracting a reasonable number of visitors, albeit fewer. However, the middle market tier may face more significant impacts from declining visits.
Those at the bottom of the market inevitably influence the top, Hill clarified: “As the bottom market struggles, you’ll observe numbers affecting the whole city, with properties managing multiple hotels differently based on their target audiences.”
Despite recent challenges, Hill believes they are temporary and related to geopolitical tensions, expressing confidence in Las Vegas’s unique appeal and eventual return of visitors: “No destination offers the escape and celebratory opportunities with Las Vegas’s intensity.”
