Just before Thursday’s trade deadline, the New York Knicks secured a deal to obtain point guard Jose Alvarado from the New Orleans Pelicans. In return, the Pelicans receive Dalen Terry, two second-round picks, and cash considerations.
The Knicks were eager to bring in Alvarado to serve as a reliable playmaker off the bench, supporting star point guard Jalen Brunson. At 27, Alvarado offers strong defense and playmaking skills as a ballhandler.
New York expedited the move for Alvarado following guard Miles McBride’s core muscle surgery, which is projected to sideline him for an extended period, potentially affecting his playoff availability.
Alvarado is expected to quickly assume a key role, providing much-needed consistency in the backcourt off the bench. In 41 games, he averages 7.9 points, 3.1 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.9 steals, shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 36.3 percent from three-point range.
Having signed an extension with New Orleans last season, Alvarado holds a $4.5 million player option for next season. This opportunity allows him to align himself with a playoff contender and be a pivotal force that could boost his new team’s chances for a deep playoff run.
The Knicks are currently second in the Eastern Conference standings with a 33-18 record, trailing an eight-game winning streak. They are 4.5 games behind the Detroit Pistons for the top spot in the East.
