This season marked the Knicks’ most successful in 25 years, with 51 wins and a return to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000. Despite previous setbacks, it is clear progress was made. However, New York’s 2024-25 campaign ultimately did not succeed, falling short in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers.
Leon Rose’s major move to trade Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Karl-Anthony Towns was intended to transform the Knicks into an offensive powerhouse, alongside Jalen Brunson. The team’s identity was shifting. Donte DiVincenzo, known for his defensive grit, and center Isaiah Hartenstein, who moved to Oklahoma City, were both missed.
Towns, known for his inconsistent defensive play, struggled to provide defensive stability. Even though the Knicks averaged 109 points per game, ranking fifth in the regular season, their defensive vulnerabilities were exposed, particularly with Brunson and Towns on the floor.
Brunson’s defensive limitations were exploited throughout the postseason, notably by Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton in the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite this, Brunson remains crucial to the Knicks, embodying their recent success and leadership.
Towns, however, faced criticism especially for his defense. He struggled against players like Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner, with Turner shooting nearly 60% when guarded by Towns in the conference finals. The Pacers capitalized on his weak drop coverage with mid-range shots.
Towns’ defensive issues reportedly frustrated his teammates. An Athletic report revealed dissatisfaction with his defensive approach and communication, which lacked clarity and execution.
The Knicks allowed an average of 116.8 points per game in the Eastern Conference Finals, being overwhelmed by Indiana’s offense multiple times. Their defensive struggles hinder their chances of ending a 53-year championship drought. If frustration with Towns continues, trade speculation may rise, as his versatility could attract valuable offers.
Alternatively, a healthy Mitchell Robinson could enhance the team’s defense. His presence at center would let coach Tom Thibodeau reposition Towns to power forward, supported by last year’s top defensive Timberwolves. Rose might need to secure additional depth at center due to Robinson’s injury history.
Improving the team’s defense is essential for Rose, regardless of roster changes.
