England 1-2 Germany (Scott 76; Knauff 3 Weiper 33)
Lee Carsley’s team to face Spain in the quarter-final.
Lee Carsley hoped England’s Under-21 squad would impress Thomas Tuchel while defending their European title in Slovakia, but their first-half display against Germany’s reserve team was lackluster. England trailed 2-0 at halftime due to goals from Ansgar Knauff and Nelson Weiper. There was a moment when their advancement to the quarter-finals depended on the outcome of Slovenia versus the Czech Republic.
However, England’s second-half performance improved, with Alex Scott inciting a dramatic finish that nearly led to an equalizer. This offers Carsley some positives to focus on as they prepare to meet Spain in the quarter-finals on Saturday night. Having previously defeated Spain in the final two years ago in Georgia, England knows they cannot replicate their defensive errors against Germany.
