Hopes for the Yankees to strengthen their infield with Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte ended on Monday. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Yankees are among five teams on Marte’s no-trade list, alongside the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Athletics. The Yankees had been linked to Marte recently, following a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan about potential trade interest in second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. If the aim was to upgrade with Marte, general manager Brian Cashman faces a challenge. Chisholm was a key player for the Yankees last season, hitting 31 home runs with 80 RBI and an .813 OPS. Marte, 32, delivered a remarkable season with 28 home runs and an .893 OPS and is contracted through 2031 at a reasonable rate ($16 million in 2026). Chisholm will become a free agent after the 2026 season. With Marte no longer an option, the Yankees may need to retain Chisholm as their starting second baseman, which isn’t a major issue for an infield with other uncertainties. Trade-deadline acquisition Ryan McMahon offers strong defense at third base, but his hitting has been inconsistent. Shortstop Anthony Volpe will miss the start of the season due to shoulder surgery, while Ben Rice is set to take on the first base role.
