New South Wales Police have detained a Kazakhstan couple involved in a sophisticated cheating scheme at Crown Resorts’ main Sydney casino. The duo allegedly employed wireless devices to gain an illegal edge, extracting AU$1,179,412 ($771,800) from Crown Sydney. Surveillance team members at the Barangaroo casino noticed suspicious betting patterns involving the couple on table games over several weeks in October and November.
A social media user shared a video of the news story, highlighting a detail about the 36-year-old woman who reportedly hid a spy camera under a Disney logo on her shirt.
On November 25, staff noticed the spy camera, leading to the arrest of the woman and her 44-year-old husband at Crown Sydney after they informed officers linked to the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad Casino and Racing Unit.
Authorities claim the couple used advanced electronic aids, including modified mobile phones and concealed earpieces, to execute the scam. These devices allegedly recorded the tables while the couple communicated through earpieces, enabling the person at the table to place strategically informed bets.
Police also discovered “other gambling props, high-end jewellery” and €2000 ($2,323) at the couple’s temporary accommodation in Sydney. The couple was charged with “dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception” and was denied bail.
Organised Crime Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Peter Faux, remarked in a press release: “Our detectives work closely with casino security to detect and prevent unlawful activities.”
“This strong collaboration is essential to preserving the integrity of gaming operations and is demonstrated in results like this,” DS Faux stated.
