QUEENS, NY — Reed Garrett allowed five runs in the sixth inning, as the struggling New York Mets lost the first game of their double-header to the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field.
Joey Ortiz hit a decisive grand slam after Garrett allowed an inherited runner from starting pitcher Clay Holmes to score, tying the game at two apiece.
The Brewers hit three home runs in total, with Sal Frelick and Isaac Collins adding solo shots in the first and seventh innings.
The Mets (48-38) have lost 14 of their last 17 games and four straight after being swept by the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
The Mets’ offense was poor, managing just two hits against Brewers pitching led by starter Freddy Peralta, who allowed both runs and both hits over six innings while striking out six.
New York didn’t get a hit after Pete Alonso’s RBI single in the fourth inning. Alonso was the only Met to reach base afterward, being hit by a pitch in the sixth.
The Mets have been outscored 37-6 in their last four games.
Holmes fell behind two pitches in when Frelick hit a homer for his sixth of the season but rebounded to get through the next four innings without further damage while the Mets gained a 2-1 lead with a Brett Baty sacrifice fly in the third and Alonso’s hit an inning later.
Holmes, however, was removed at 90 pitches after a walk and a fly out in the sixth for Garrett, who immediately gave up the lead.
Brice Turang doubled to score Christian Yelich, though Brandon Nimmo misplayed it in the corner. That run was charged to Holmes, who allowed two runs on three hits in 5.1 innings with four walks and one strikeout.
Garrett then allowed a single, a walk, and a 3-1 count to Ortiz before giving up a grand slam that opened the game.
Collins, who went 4-for-4 and reached base five times, capped Milwaukee’s win with a solo homer in the seventh off Brandon Waddell.
