The New York Jets face challenges in building a stable culture with constant head coach changes, yet Aaron Glenn’s future with the team seems uncertain after this season. Sunday afternoon was marked by another blow to their pride, as the New England Patriots dominated with a 42-10 victory against Glenn’s team in the second-to-last game of another disappointing season.
In seasons without playoff hopes — a familiar scenario for the Jets (3-13) as they face their 15th consecutive such season — coaching security often depends on visible progress. Unfortunately, rather than seeing advancement, Glenn’s Jets are experiencing a worrying decline.
In their last four games, starting in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins, New York has been outscored 153-46. Sunday’s game against the Patriots saw a lackluster performance, a pattern seen in previous weeks. New England quarterback Drake Maye was brilliant, completing 19 of 21 passes for 256 yards and five touchdowns before being taken out with over five minutes remaining in the third quarter, at which point the score was 42-3. Protecting him was logical since he has been instrumental in the Patriots’ turnaround from a four-win season to a 13-3 record in 2025.
Maye became the fourth quarterback in franchise history to throw five touchdowns in a single game and the first in 40 years to achieve at least 90% pass completion with five-plus touchdowns. Most of his success came in the first half, where he completed 17 of 19 passes for 229 yards and four touchdowns to different receivers. The Patriots’ offense gained 344 total yards in the first half alone, marking an NFL season high. They scored touchdowns on their first six drives, ending only when Maye was substituted in the third quarter.
This marks the second time in three weeks that the Jets’ defense, which dismissed coordinator Steve Wilks, has been overpowered without resistance. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence previously recorded six touchdowns in a 48-20 win over New York in Week 15.
Breece Hall became the first Jets rusher in a decade to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a season, with 111 yards on Sunday, including a 59-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, Hall had to exit the game soon after due to a leg injury.
Quarterback Brady Cook’s performance further underscores the need for the Jets to aim for a top quarterback in the draft, completing 19 of 33 passes for 153 yards and an interception.
