Aaron Glenn has addressed the major gaps in his coaching staff, with the New York Jets appointing Frank Reich as their offensive coordinator on Wednesday.
This follows a week of confusion for the franchise, which parted ways with former offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand after attempts to alter his duties. Although he was to retain the offensive coordinator title, another assistant was supposed to call the plays. Reich first emerged as a candidate for this role.
Instead, Engstrand was dismissed a month after the Jets terminated their defensive coordinator, Steve Wilks. Brian Duker was subsequently hired for the position from a limited pool, after Glenn announced he would call the defense’s plays. This led to a breakdown in discussions between the Jets and former Ravens and Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.
Reich served last year as Stanford’s interim coach, with a 4-8 record. He previously coached the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers, achieving a 41-43-1 record. He was also the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator during their Super Bowl LII victory over the New England Patriots.
“Frank has a rare combination of experience, creativity, and calm under pressure,” a statement from Glenn read. “He’s lived this game from every angle — as a quarterback in this league and as a coach who’s led offenses at the highest level. He is unique in his ability to see the game for what it is right now and adapt when appropriate. Frank understands offense and how to utilize the strengths of players. I am looking forward to how he will help this team have success.”
Reich inherits a unit that performed poorly last season, ranking 29th in points and last in passing yards following the unsuccessful Justin Fields experiment.
