Illinois Tightens Gambling Advertising Rules and Restrictions - SCCG Management

Illinois is implementing stricter regulations for gambling advertising across the United States. The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) announced new rules aimed at enhancing consumer protection.

These measures include regulations on marketing, advertising, and promotions for licensed casinos, video gaming, sports wagering, and more. A significant change is the prohibition of gambling ads on college campuses to protect at-risk and vulnerable groups.

IGB administrator Marcus D. Fruchter stated, “By adopting these measures, the IGB is building upon existing regulations to implement additional safeguards and standards that further protect the public and encourage responsible gambling habits.”

Fruchter emphasized that the new regulations aim to provide clear, consistent, ethical, and transparent advertising and marketing guidelines for all casinos. The measures are designed to prevent ads from reaching underage or vulnerable individuals, such as those struggling with addiction.

Additionally, the IGB now requires gambling ads to prominently display warnings about the addictive nature of gambling and promote responsible gambling. The regulator is advocating for ethical regulation and advertising rules to safeguard consumers in the state.

To ensure compliance, the IGB mandates that companies keep records of all advertising and marketing materials, including their publication dates. There is a specific prohibition against using images of college or university students, or creating ads suggestive of such settings.

These efforts aim to reinforce existing guidelines and demonstrate the IGB’s awareness of potential issues arising from unchecked advertising.
