Illinois Gaming Regulators Approve College Sports Betting Ad Ban, Enhance RG Messaging - SCCG Management

The Illinois Gaming Board has introduced new regulations for sports betting and gambling advertisements. These rules ban such advertisements from being shown on college campuses and require responsible gambling messages in all promotions.

The board aims to protect college students and problem gamblers with these new rules, which went into effect on August 1. The regulations also restrict ads from college media outlets and venues used for university events, and prevent the depiction of students or university settings in ads.

Operators must maintain logs of their advertisements, including publication details, and provide an option for recipients to opt-out of marketing materials. They cannot engage third parties to advertise on a commission-based model related to wager volume or outcomes.

The Illinois Gaming Board oversees 17 casinos, about 9,000 video gaming locations, and 14 sportsbooks in the state.
