Emil Heineman secured a dramatic win for the New York Islanders by scoring in the fourth round of the shootout, leading to a 5-4 triumph over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night at UBS Arena. Pavel Dorofeyev of Vegas tied the game with just 12.1 seconds remaining in regulation, forcing overtime after Bo Horvat’s second goal of the night had given the Islanders a lead. Dorofeyev capitalized on a rebound off Mitch Marner’s shot to send the game into overtime.
Within seconds of overtime, Kyle MacLean was penalized for a high-stick after an official review, leaving the Islanders short-handed for nearly two minutes. Despite relentless pressure, the Knights only managed two power-play shots, both stopped by Ilya Sorokin, who recorded 31 saves. Vegas goalie Carter Hart made 23 saves.
The Islanders (17-11-3, 37 points) have won four of their last five games, including victories against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Colorado Avalanche. In the first period, two quick goals for the Knights came from rebounds left by Ilya Sorokin. Noah Hanifin scored from a Jack Eichel shot during 4-on-4 play, followed by Mitch Marner capitalizing on a rebound from a Kaedan Korczak attempt.
The Islanders reduced the deficit late in the first period when Horvat scored his 18th goal of the season from a Ryan Pulock assist. Marc Gatcomb equalized in the second period, tipping in a Casey Cizikas pass. Later, Holmstrom put New York ahead for the first time with a wrist shot, assisted by Calum Ritchie and Anthony Duclair.
Ivan Barbashev drew level for Vegas early in the third period, beating Matthew Schaefer to a loose puck and poking it past Sorokin. Horvat then restored the Islanders’ lead with a power-play goal through the legs of Hart.
