The tournament originated as their father’s vision. Twenty-five years later, Joe and Randy Cruz continue to uphold his legacy by nurturing one of New York City’s top streetball tournaments, Hoops in the Sun.
Hoops in the Sun, an acclaimed Bronx streetball tournament, marks its 25th season. From June through August, the league, featuring youth in the Rising Suns League and adult teams, convenes every weekend during the Orchard Beach peak temperatures.
A signature of the league is its vibrant, sublimated uniforms. For its silver jubilee, Hoops in the Sun introduces jerseys with a special logo to honor Joe “Pops” Cruz, the tournament’s founder.
Streetball, a casual basketball style typically played outdoors on urban courts, allows players to display their individual skills. It thrives in numerous U.S. cities, notably representing summer culture in New York and Los Angeles.
In 1999, while on business in Venice, CA, “Pops” witnessed the local streetball culture, inspiring him to bring that same excitement to New York, as Randy Cruz recalls.
The Cruz family, originally from The Bronx near Orchard Beach, considered the beach their second home. After discussions with the Department of Parks and Recreation, the tournament launched in 2000 as an eight-team league. It has since expanded to over 70 teams, according to Joe and Randy.
The tournament provides a safe space for emerging players to showcase their abilities, with many moving on to play in high school, college, and professionally.
Several NBA stars have visited over the years, such as Kemba Walker and Tracy McGrady.
“Pops” passed away in 2004, and the tournament’s existence is a testament to his vision, something his sons deeply value.
“He had the foresight to bring this to Orchard Beach,” Randy said. “I want this to live on beyond me.”
Last Friday, during the 25th anniversary event at Twenty Four New York’s Oculus location, one of the original 2000 uniforms was displayed. It was a basic red jersey with a white and yellow oval labeled “Hoops in the Sun.”
The uniforms, much like the tournament, have evolved since their debut. The 2025 jerseys are vivid, featuring unique patterns and logos for each team. The Rising Suns league jerseys are text-only, while the main “Hoops in the Sun” jerseys showcase a photo of “Pops,” encircled by “Joe ‘Pops’ Cruz Courts.”
Ray Rivera, a former player in the tournament’s first decade, and Chozen Sportswear designed the uniforms. Joe Cruz Jr. emphasized the importance of including “Pops” in the design.
“We can’t forget,” Joe recounted from design meetings. “Even though today’s kids didn’t know your dad, you and Randy become the new role models.”
“This is our thank you to him,” Joe added.
The silver anniversary season includes various promotions and events. Joe mentioned plans to honor the tournament’s top 25 players and past champions with banners. In late July, an all-star weekend will replace the usual all-star game, featuring teams from across the state. For the first time, the semi-finals and championship will follow a best-of-three series format.
Joe also noted planned appearances by veteran players and special guests.
Hoops in the Sun will start its 25th season on June 14, preserving “Pops” legacy while offering a platform for both youth and adults to refine their basketball skills.
