Hard Rock Digital Sparks Speculation About Potential PointsBet Canada Acquisition
Hard Rock Digital is making waves in the Canadian gaming market amid increasing speculation that the company is considering acquiring PointsBet Canada. According to industry sources, the Florida-based gaming operator has submitted an application for an iGaming license in Ontario—a move many believe could be the first step toward a significant acquisition.
Betr Eyes PointsBet Acquisition, Plans to Divest Canadian Arm
This development comes as Betr Entertainment intensifies its pursuit to acquire PointsBet Holdings Ltd., an Australian gaming firm. Betr, which currently holds nearly 20% of PointsBet shares, has submitted a proposal valued at approximately $232 million. The mixed cash-and-stock offer is a direct challenge to a competing AU$350 million (roughly $226 million) bid from Japanese tech company MIXI.
A key component of Betr’s proposal involves divesting PointsBet Canada. Industry chatter suggests Hard Rock could be a frontrunner to take over the Canadian subsidiary if the sale proceeds. An insider told Casino.org that Hard Rock’s interest in the Ontario license appears to be strategically aligned with acquiring PointsBet Canada’s customer base. However, both Hard Rock Digital and PointsBet Canada have declined to comment on the matter publicly.
Ontario’s Gaming Regulator Weighs New Entrants
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has confirmed it is evaluating several new operator applications but clarified that Hard Rock has not yet officially registered. Given that the licensing process in Ontario can take several months, any potential deal involving Hard Rock and PointsBet Canada may still be some time away.
Hard Rock Eyes North American Expansion
Betr’s initial acquisition strategy had faced skepticism due to concerns over financing and structural complexities. However, interest in the revised offer has grown, particularly as the plan to offload PointsBet Canada gains traction.
Should Hard Rock complete the acquisition, it would significantly strengthen its digital gaming footprint across North America. Hard Rock Digital—operating under the umbrella of Hard Rock International and Seminole Gaming—already maintains a presence in multiple regions, including a corporate office in Toronto.
Ontario’s iGaming sector, currently home to 49 licensed operators and 84 active gaming websites, remains a magnet for global gaming heavyweights. If Hard Rock officially enters the province, it could reshape the competitive landscape of Canada’s largest online gaming market.
As licensing decisions unfold and M&A talks continue, the next moves from Betr, MIXI, and Hard Rock are poised to influence the future direction of Canada’s flourishing online gaming industry.
