The Memphis Grizzlies have officially named Tuomas Lisalo as their new head coach following their early exit from the playoffs at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Lisalo, who had been serving as the interim head coach since March after the dismissal of Taylor Jenkins, impressed the Grizzlies’ front office with his leadership and strategic approach. General manager Zach Kleiman expressed strong confidence in Lisalo’s abilities, stating that his teams have consistently demonstrated discipline, toughness, and cohesion.
“I have full confidence in Tuomas serving as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies going forward,” Kleiman said. “Tuomas’ teams at every level have been disciplined, tenacious and connected on both ends of the floor, consistently exceeding expectations. We look forward to the same in Memphis.”
Lisalo now faces the challenge of guiding the Grizzlies to championship contention—a goal that eluded Jenkins during his five-year tenure, which included three playoff appearances but just one trip beyond the first round.
One of the team’s cornerstones, star point guard Ja Morant, has already shown his support for Lisalo. Speaking during the team’s exit interviews, Morant praised Lisalo’s understanding of the game and their shared perspective on in-game situations.
“I feel like Tuomas is a good coach,” Morant said. “For me, going into my film sessions with him and just talking about the game of basketball, seeing and hearing that he sees the same thing I see out there on the floor. I wouldn’t say it’s been surprising, but it’s been very exciting.”
With a talented core featuring Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr., Memphis hopes Lisalo can unlock the team’s full potential and push them into serious title contention. The future now rests on his ability to lead this promising squad to the next level.
