This decision came after a loss to the Detroit Lions, where the Giants led 27-17 in the fourth quarter, only to concede a 49-yard touchdown to Jahmyr Gibbs and a game-tying field goal in regulation. In overtime, Gibbs scored a 69-yard touchdown on the first play, securing the win for the Lions. The Giants have led in the fourth quarter five times this season, only to lose, a record in the NFL. This includes a loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 7, squandering an eight-point lead. They’ve also lost five road games where they led by 10 or more points. Previously, they blew a 20-10 lead against the Chicago Bears, leading to head coach Brian Daboll’s dismissal. The Giants rank 30th in the NFL for yards and points allowed per game. Interim head coach Mike Kafka, now 0-2, made his first major decision by firing Bowen. Kafka’s debut saw a loss to the Green Bay Packers after Bowen’s defense surrendered a late touchdown.
