Zac Gallen Silences Mets Again as Diamondbacks Win 5-1
Zac Gallen continued to dominate the New York Mets, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win on Tuesday night at Chase Field. This marked the second time in just five days that the Mets were unable to solve the right-hander, who has quickly bounced back after a rocky start to the 2025 season.
Following a 1-4 start to the year with a 5.57 ERA over his first six appearances, Gallen has rediscovered his form against the Mets. Across back-to-back outings, including a May 1 start at Citi Field, he allowed just two runs on four hits in 13 innings, striking out 14. In Tuesday’s game, he went seven strong innings, allowing only one run on two hits, striking out six and walking three.
All three of Gallen’s walks came in the third inning, when the Mets briefly took the lead after he issued consecutive two-out passes to Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso. That gave New York a 1-0 advantage after Tyrone Taylor had kept the inning alive by beating out a double play. However, that would be the only run the Mets could produce.
Gallen then settled into a groove, retiring the next 11 batters before giving up a one-out single to Mark Vientos in the seventh. Jeff McNeil followed with a ground ball that turned into an inning-ending double play.
On the mound for the Mets, David Peterson struggled, allowing four runs on five hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out six and walked four, receiving the loss — his second of the season.
Arizona tied the game in the fourth when Josh Naylor’s groundout brought home Randal Grichuk. Two batters later, Geraldo Perdomo added another RBI on a fielder’s choice, scoring Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Gurriel provided the exclamation point in the sixth inning with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, pushing the Diamondbacks’ lead to 4-1.
The Mets continue to falter in May, dropping five of their last seven games. They are now 5-7 in their last 12 contests, slipping to a 23-14 record on the season.
