A striking exhibition in Manchester highlights the accomplishments and challenges faced by black players in England.
At the Score Gallery in Manchester’s National Football Museum, a unique collection honors figures such as Nikita Parris, Bobby De Cordova-Reid, and Pelé. The display features numerous match-worn shirts and a handmade banner celebrating Marcus Rashford’s successful campaign for a government U-turn on free school meals for vulnerable children.
The Black in the Game exhibition not only celebrates footballing success but also the cultural influence of key figures from African and Caribbean origins, including those in administrative and non-playing roles. It acknowledges stars like Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw, a leading scorer in the WSL, and was developed over three years with input from footballers and scholars.
