Former Jets GM Joe Douglas Returns to Eagles in Senior Advisory Role
Joe Douglas, the former general manager of the New York Jets, is making a return to the Philadelphia Eagles. He’ll rejoin the organization as a senior scouting advisor.
Douglas was at the helm of the Jets from 2019 until midway through the 2024 season, when both he and head coach Robert Saleh were fired in the midst of another disappointing campaign. The team started the 2024-25 season with a dismal 3-8 record.
Looking to turn the page, the Jets have brought in Darren Mougey as general manager and Aaron Glenn as head coach to lead the franchise in a new direction.
Though Douglas was responsible for some high-profile acquisitions, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, those moves ultimately didn’t yield the intended results. Rodgers, a future Hall-of-Famer, was only fully healthy for one of his two seasons with the team. Despite his presence, the Jets failed to gain momentum under Douglas’s leadership.
Among his other major moves was the trade for defensive end Haason Reddick from the Eagles. The move backfired as Reddick held out for nearly half the season over contract disputes. Douglas also signed veteran wide receiver Mike Williams, aiming to pair him with star Garrett Wilson. Williams, however, had little impact, especially while playing with Rodgers.
In a final effort to salvage the season, Douglas made a blockbuster trade for Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders. The team went 1-4 during Adams’ short stint under Douglas, compounding the general manager’s missteps.
Douglas’ draft record was also marred by significant misses. He selected quarterback Zach Wilson second overall in the 2021 draft. Wilson struggled throughout his tenure and failed to develop into the franchise quarterback the team envisioned. One year earlier, Douglas used a first-round pick on offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, whose performance similarly fell short of expectations.
During Douglas’s five-plus seasons with the Jets, the team compiled a 32-68 record—good for a .320 winning percentage. That marked the franchise’s worst stretch since Rich Kotite’s 4-28 run between 1995 and 1996.
Before joining the Jets, Douglas served as the Eagles’ vice president of player personnel from 2016 to 2019. He played a key role in building the roster that captured the franchise’s first Super Bowl title in 2018. His return to Philadelphia marks a reunion with an organization where he previously found success.
