Martin O’Neill has often been underestimated. During his time as a player at Nottingham Forest, he had a challenging relationship with Brian Clough, who once remarked that the linesman was outperforming him on the field. “You’re arrogant, with very little to be arrogant about,” Clough would often tell the Irishman, who eventually succeeded in proving his manager wrong. Perhaps that was Cloughie’s brilliance, knowing exactly how to motivate him.
