María Corina Machado recently received the Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless efforts in championing democratic rights. Meanwhile, Donald Trump responded to the news in a predictably flamboyant manner. Having campaigned vigorously to secure the award for himself, the U.S. president swiftly took credit for the Venezuelan opposition leader’s achievement. He also detailed his own self-touted, albeit questionable, accomplishments in global peace efforts and criticized the committee for not granting him the prize. With security concerns in mind, it remains uncertain whether the new Nobel laureate will attend the Oslo ceremony in December to collect her award. However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino seems determined to overshadow her success. Infantino plans to present a peace prize of his own invention in front of a massive global audience of football fans, just a week earlier in Washington.
