The Italian word for grit and fierce determination, “grinta”, which Juventus has historically embodied, was notably missing in Istanbul on Tuesday. Instead, Juventus delivered a performance as fragile as a soggy cannolo. Despite coming back from a goal down to lead at halftime thanks to Teun Koopmeiners’ two goals, Juve showed some resilience before a second-half collapse so absurd it seemed their halftime drinks were spiked. Although it was expected that Galatasaray’s lineup, featuring players like Davinson Sánchez, Lucas Torreira, Victor Osimhen, Leroy Sané, Mauro Icardi, and Ilkay Gündogan, would challenge the Italians over two legs, few anticipated them scoring five goals against the Bianconeri in the first match.
Re: yesterday’s Football Daily tour of refereeing nightmares across Europe, I’d like to commend English refereeing. Darren England’s impeccable officiation of the Macclesfield v Brentford FA Cup tie proved it can be done well without VAR” – John French.
Re: the question in yesterday’s Football Daily: ‘Who wants to be a referee?’ I do. I love football, but I’m a weak player. Without referees like me, games might not happen. A game with refereeing errors is better than one without referees where players make calls themselves. More former players opting to referee would help” – George Affeldt.
May I suggest a solution from across the pond for football’s poor VAR implementation? Although much of America’s conduct isn’t exemplary, our video review system stands out. The challenge system is key, unlike the Premier League’s near-constant review of calls. Managers have limited challenges and must decide quickly. Correct challenges result in overturned calls and another challenge; wrong ones lose future challenge opportunities. No video booth intrusion on unnoticed field minutiae, reducing controversies. One downside: reduced manager meltdowns here. If sure a call is wrong, challenge it; if no challenges left due to previous errors, accept it—something Premier League pundits might consider” – Steve Plever.
