The Philippines is currently amid a heated discussion on whether to completely ban online casinos, and local consumers are increasingly worried about the authenticity of the gaming websites they frequent.
### Filipinos Prefer Safe and Regulated Gambling Platforms
A recent survey involving over 1,000 Filipinos inquired whether they were cautious about the casinos they chose to play at. More than half showed a preference for regulated and licensed websites, prioritizing safety and authenticity.
The survey, led by The Fourth Wall with Research Director John Brylle L. Bae, revealed:
“There is an understanding that a total ban won’t stop online gambling, but rather push it underground, escalating risks like scams and addiction through unregulated channels. This shows their advocacy for regulation is based on safer choices and enhanced consumer protection.”
For many players, opting for a regulated and secure online casino was crucial in their brand selection. The survey aimed to determine the main factors influencing players’ decisions and how these factors affected their choices.
The survey also assessed public opinion on the current regulatory framework, showing 53% of respondents against a ban on regulated online gambling, while 18% were strongly in favor.
A significant number of respondents acknowledged that a ban would not yield the desired outcomes – 75% of those surveyed believed a ban would solely drive players towards unregulated offshore markets, risking player safety.
### GCash as a Preferred Payment Method; 12% Borrow to Gamble
The survey also examined the risks associated with gambling, particularly focusing on Filipinos’ spending habits. 36% of respondents identified as “break-even” players who generally neither lost nor gained much.
This group did not resort to borrowing for gambling. However, 12% of respondents identified as riskier gamblers, admitting to borrowing funds to maintain their habit.
