Human rights organizations have warned that FIFA risks becoming “a public relations tool of an increasingly authoritarian US government” as they urge the football’s international governing body to enhance protections for residents and fans during the upcoming World Cup. Concerns about potential immigration raids or arbitrary detentions have prompted the Sport and Rights Alliance to make seven demands from FIFA before the World Cup draw in Washington. The primary call is for FIFA to “commit to ensuring effective protections against racial profiling, arbitrary detention, and unlawful immigration enforcement during the tournament.”
