Fifa has increased the World Cup prize money by 50% for the upcoming tournament, awarding $50m (£37.5m) to the champions. All 48 participating nations will receive a minimum of $10.5m. This decision by the Fifa Council follows controversy over ticket prices for the event in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. In response to public discontent, Fifa has offered a limited number of discounted tickets for fans of the competing countries.
