Leyton Orient’s stunning transformation in recent years has brought them to the brink of reaching the Championship—the second tier of English football—for the first time since 1982. Ling, a former Leyton Orient midfielder and manager, thought his days in the professional game were behind him. His coaching career had derailed after suffering mental health struggles while managing Torquay United and later Swindon Town, leading to his resignation from the latter in 2015.
Two years later, as Orient reeled from a catastrophic period under former owner Francesco Becchetti—an era that saw them tumble out of the English Football League for the first time in 112 years—new ownership took over and reached out to Ling. Their offer to bring him back to the club as director of football in 2017 proved to be a life-changing moment.
“There’s no doubt in my mind,” Ling reflects. “To be where we are is a minor miracle. Everyone talks about the Hollywood story at Wrexham. We’re more of a Wood Green story – just without the celebrity backing.”
Since stepping into the role, Ling has helped orchestrate a slow but determined rise. Under his guidance and vision, Orient climbed back into the Football League, and now find themselves on the cusp of an historic promotion. They face Charlton Athletic in the League One playoff final this Sunday—a match that could mark a return to the second division for the first time in over four decades.
While documentaries and A-list endorsements might be missing from Orient’s story, the grit, passion, and resilience behind their journey arguably eclipse many better-known football fairytales. And central to that quiet revolution stands Martin Ling—a father figure who helped bring the club back from the brink.
