FanDuel, America’s leading online sportsbook and gaming company under Flutter Entertainment, announced a partnership with CME Group (NASDAQ: CME) to launch event-based contracts for U.S. customers later this year, pending CFTC regulatory review.
As mentioned in the official Fanduel press release, CME Group and FanDuel will form a joint venture to operate a non-clearing futures commission merchant (FCM) that facilitates access to these fully funded contracts. If approved, the products will be listed on and subject to the rules of CME Group exchanges and available through all participating FCMs, including FanDuel.
What FanDuel Customers Can Expect
Through this partnership, FanDuel users will be able to take simple “yes” or “no” positions for as little as $1 on a wide range of markets, including:
- Stock indexes: S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100
- Commodities: Oil, natural gas, gold
- Cryptocurrencies
- Economic indicators: GDP and CPI
These contracts are designed with defined risk and can be traded multiple times per day, offering a new way for sports bettors and retail traders to speculate on real-world outcomes.
Why It Matters for Sports Bettors
FanDuel’s expansion reflects a broader push to blur the line between sports betting and financial trading. Its customer base—accustomed to spreads, props, and parlays—may find the contracts similar in format to micro-betting, but tied to global markets instead of games.
“Partnering with CME Group will unlock our ability to bring even more new and engaging products to FanDuel’s fast-growing customer base,” said Amy Howe, CEO of FanDuel Group. “We believe there is potentially a wide audience for trading event-based markets and we want to provide a platform that allows our customers to engage in this activity. We are excited to be partnering with CME Group to design new and engaging products, combining innovation with best-in-class regulatory compliance and consumer protections.”
CME Group Chairman and CEO Terry Duffy added: “Individual investors are increasingly sophisticated and continually pursuing new financial opportunities. Together, our event-based products will appeal to this growing interest, and we will provide education to attract a new generation of potential traders not active in derivatives today.”
Regulatory Watch
The initiative still requires CFTC approval, which will dictate the timing and scope of the rollout. Event contracts have historically faced scrutiny when they resemble gambling, but both FanDuel and CME Group stressed compliance, transparency, and consumer protection as core principles. If cleared, the joint venture would mark a major step for FanDuel as it moves beyond sports betting into financial speculation, giving customers the ability to trade on the economy with the same simplicity they wager on the NFL or NBA — a shift that could reshape the crossover between Wall Street and U.S. sportsbooks in 2025.
