Borussia Dortmund Clinch Champions League Spot With Commanding Win; Leipzig Miss Out on Europe
Borussia Dortmund secured a dramatic late-season surge to claim the final Champions League qualification spot, defeating already-relegated Holstein Kiel 3-0 on the final day of the Bundesliga season. The result sealed a fourth-place finish for Dortmund, capping off an impressive turnaround under Niko Kovac, who guided his team from 10th place just seven games earlier to Europe’s top competition.
Dortmund needed a victory by at least three goals to guarantee their position in the top four, and they delivered with clinical efficiency. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring early, converting a third-minute penalty to put Dortmund ahead. Holstein Kiel’s woes deepened when Carl Johansson received a straight red card, reducing the visitors to ten men. Despite the numerical advantage, Dortmund were unable to extend their lead before halftime.
However, they maintained control in the second half, eventually securing the necessary scoreline to leapfrog Freiburg, who stumbled with a 3-1 home loss against third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. As a result, Freiburg dropped into the Europa League despite being in pole position for a Champions League berth heading into the final round.
Mainz also capitalized on the shake-up, securing a place in the Conference League, while RB Leipzig missed out on European football altogether in a disappointing conclusion to their campaign.
