“They are quite similar,” Enzo Maresca remarked about Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson last week, a point largely overlooked. Tensions are rising, sides are forming. It’s Delap versus Jackson, Jackson versus Delap. One stays, the other might be loaned to Serie A. It’s the unwritten rule.
In this context, Delap had a favorable week. During the Club World Cup against Flamengo on Friday, he was chosen to start and demonstrated intense, controlled aggression for over an hour before being substituted for Jackson. Jackson then lost possession with his first touch, made a reckless challenge with his second, got sent off, and was blamed for Chelsea’s 3-1 loss. He later offered a public apology on social media for his behavior.
