Saturday was a complete disaster, with no redeeming aspects. After a few good weeks, it was bound to happen.
To regain some weekend dignity, I’ll support Daylight in the Prix Jean Prat at Deauville. Trained by Patrice Cottier, this horse is available at 33/1, which seems overly generous, especially if it rains as predicted.
Last season, this Earthlight filly performed well in top-level races. She ran exclusively at 6f, winning two of her first three races, including a G3 at Deauville. She then finished third by 1.5l behind Whistlejacket and Rashabar in the G1 Prix Morny, also at Deauville, and was a strong 3l second behind Lake Victoria in the Cheveley Park at Newmarket.
**Two Runs**
This season, she’s had two races. In her first attempt at 7f over this C&D, Cottier used Kaadi as a pacemaker, but the field ignored her, staying 8-10 lengths back, and Barzalona misjudged his timing, reaching the front too soon. Daylight faded into third in the last 100 yards.
In her second race of the season, Daylight competed in the French 1000 Guineas, with the 1m distance proving too much. She finished seventh, just over 4l behind the leaders. The bookmakers dismissed her performance.
**Optimum Trip**
Seven furlongs seem to be her ideal distance, and that’s what she gets today. With course form figures of 133, it seems her season has been directed towards this race.
Mickael Barzalona returns as jockey, hopefully having learned to time his challenge better. If he executes it right and gets a clear run, Daylight can potentially place at 33/1.
