The New York Jets kicked off another fresh chapter on Wednesday as they began training camp for the 2025 season. General manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn aim to end the Jets’ 14-year playoff absence after last year’s 5-12 record and a third-place AFC East finish.
Before their preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 9, the Jets have some time to assess their roster. There are numerous storylines to follow, especially concerning the quarterbacks.
The team has a new addition in the quarterback lineup, signing Justin Fields to a two-year contract. Tyrod Taylor is also returning, entering the final year of his deal. The duo’s adaptation to Tanner Engstrand’s offensive strategy is crucial for their success.
Fields began the previous season as the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, with six starts in ten games, achieving a 4-2 record. He recorded 1,106 passing yards, 289 rushing yards, and ten touchdowns equally split between rushing and passing. Previously with the Chicago Bears, Fields was recognized for his dual-threat capability, rushing for a career-high 1,143 yards in 2022, which he couldn’t replicate in the last two seasons. Taylor, serving largely as a backup, appeared in two games with 119 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Taylor, known for his mobility, has accumulated 2,281 rushing yards over his 14-year career, averaging 5.6 yards per attempt. Fields is slightly more efficient on the ground, averaging 6.0 yards per attempt. With both quarterbacks offering mobility, it is essential to see not only who begins the season opener but also how they utilize their skills within the offense.
Additionally, the offensive line’s progress is crucial. Previously a concern, it improved last year, ranking 17th per Pro Football Focus. The team addressed this in the Draft by selecting Armand Membou in the first round, following the previous year’s first-round pick of lineman Olu Fashanu.
Membou and Fashanu join center Joe Tippmann and guards Alijah Vera-Tucker and Marquis Hayes. New York experienced losses with Morgan Moses joining the New England Patriots and Tyrone Smith retiring. With two starters gone, the team needs new talent to emerge.
Vera-Tucker managed to stay healthy, participating in 15 games. Max Mitchell has moved from a starting role, and Chukwuma Okorafor was signed in the offseason as a potential backup. With Josh Myers added for depth, the preseason is vital for the Jets to evaluate their offensive line to fill the gaps left by the departed starters.
