The incidence of kidnappings involving Chinese nationals has decreased by 50% since the closure of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in January 2025. Additionally, the fatality rates linked to these kidnappings have seen an 80% reduction.
Chinese ambassador to the Philippines, Jing Quan, disclosed these statistics following a discussion with the executive director of the Philippine Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC). He expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their “strong support” in combating illegal activities and safeguarding individuals in both countries.
In previous instances, kidnappings of Chinese citizens were often associated with unresolved debts or conflicts in the POGO sector, according to several lawmakers.
POGOs were notorious for scams and exploiting kidnapped, trafficked laborers. In July 2024, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a forthcoming ban, following major operations against illegal POGO activities. The Philippines and China have also committed to enhancing collaboration between their law enforcement agencies.
