EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — New Chelsea signing Joao Pedro was the star as Chelsea defeated Fluminense 2-0 at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday to reach the FIFA Club World Cup Final. Pedro, who joined from Brighton and Hove Albion in July, scored two impressive goals in his first competitive start for Chelsea, ensuring victory for the Premier League team.
The Brazilian forward, who spent nearly a decade in Fluminense’s youth system before debuting with their senior team, excelled in Chelsea’s controlled display amid the hot conditions in East Rutherford. Enzo Maresca’s team has now secured consecutive wins against Brazilian sides, following their 2-1 victory over Palmeiras in the quarter-finals.
Fluminense found it difficult to match their earlier strong performances against European teams that saw them draw with Borussia Dortmund and eliminate Inter Milan. Both teams initially struggled to create scoring opportunities during the tense opening 15 minutes.
Pedro’s first goal came in the 18th minute, with a curled shot into the top corner following a partially cleared cross from Pedro Neto. Pedro showed respect for his former club by refraining from celebrating and raised an apologetic hand towards Fluminense’s fans.
Chelsea missed a chance to double the lead when Malo Gusto’s header went straight to the goalkeeper. Marc Cucurella then cleared a Jhon Arias shot off the line, saving Chelsea after a mishap by their keeper.
Fluminense’s attempts to get back into the game were halted when a penalty decision for handball against Trevoh Chalobah was overturned after a VAR review. In the second half, Fluminense’s best chance for an equalizer came from Everaldo, whose shot was saved by Robert Sanchez.
Chelsea extended their lead a minute later with another stunning goal from Pedro, set up by Enzo Fernandez. Pedro’s shot, after cutting inside the penalty area, went in off the crossbar.
Pedro once again chose not to celebrate. Despite Fluminense’s efforts, Chelsea maintained control and secured their spot in the final against Real Madrid or PSG.
