Carson Soucy had already moved his family across North America last year when traded from the Vancouver Canucks to the New York Rangers. With the Rangers “retooling” and his name frequently in trade discussions, the thought of another move was daunting, especially with his second child under two weeks old.
Fortunately for Soucy, the Islanders needed to strengthen their defense after losing Alex Romanov for the season. Their third-round draft pick offer to Rangers GM Chris Drury facilitated the trade, marking just the fourth-ever trade between these New York teams and only the second since 1972.
Soucy and his family can remain settled, much to his relief. “It kind of showed where both teams are at,” Soucy said. “Drury did me a favor of not shipping my family across the country again. With a newborn, it’s nice not having to move, so I appreciate Chris for that.”
Additionally, he now finds himself in a playoff race instead of with the struggling Rangers, who lost 12 of their last 15 games, including a 5-2 loss to the Islanders. Soucy, a stay-at-home defenseman, impressed his new coach, Patrick Roy, with his physical game.
“It’s nice to have a veteran like this,” Roy said. “I thought [Scott Mayfield] and him had a strong game together. They were physical and it brings back the element we lost with Romanov’s injury. It’s nice to have him playing for us right now.”
