The Arizona Cardinals will proceed without quarterback Kyler Murray this season due to insufficient progress in his foot injury recovery.
Murray sought another opinion on Wednesday, which confirmed that his foot wasn’t healing as expected.
“It wasn’t progressing in a way that we wanted, so we went and got a different opinion, some different people and kind of looked at it, and it’s just not right,” Gannon said.
The injury happened in the Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans, leading to his placement on the injured reserve on Nov. 5, making him first eligible to practice within a three-week window starting Wednesday.
Murray will miss the rest of the season amid uncertainty about his future with the franchise. His performance consistency has been lacking, and injuries have been a recurring issue.
In the past three seasons, he has missed 20 games, playing one full season. In five games this year, he completed 110 of 161 passes for a 68.3 completion rate with six touchdowns and three interceptions, achieving an 88.6 passer rating.
In July 2022, he signed a five-year, $230.5 million extension that could keep him under contract through the 2028 season. His contract may become a major factor in determining his future in Arizona beyond this season.
It involves significant dead cap hits over the next few years, with $53.2 million in 2026, but decreasing to $7.2 million in 2027. This will be an important aspect to monitor in the offseason as Murray may find a new NFL team.
