The Brooklyn Nets have waived guard Cam Thomas after being unable to secure a trade partner before the NBA’s 3 p.m. ET deadline on Thursday, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The Nets attempted to trade Thomas for weeks, but his market was limited due to his role as a one-dimensional volume scorer, which decreased under head coach Jordi Fernandez, who focused on giving younger players more playing time amid a planned rebuild.
In the first eight games of the season before suffering a hamstring injury that sidelined him until Dec. 27, Thomas averaged 21.4 points per game in 28.3 minutes. Upon his return for 16 games, he averaged 12.8 points per game in 22.3 minutes.
With Thomas waived, the 13-36 Nets can now focus on their younger players, including rookie guards Egor Demin, Ben Saraf, and Nolan Traore. A split between Thomas and Brooklyn seemed inevitable after the team offered him a two-year, $30 million contract with a team option and a one-year, $9.5 million deal with up to $11 million in incentives, both of which he rejected. Instead, the 24-year-old opted for a $5.99 million qualifying offer.
