Ryan Seacrest Sued Over Online Casino Endorsement
Television personality Ryan Seacrest is facing a lawsuit from a California resident who claims his promotion of an online gambling platform contributed to her financial losses.
Lawsuit Highlights Sweepstakes Casino Dispute
The legal action, filed by Aubrey Carillo, accuses Seacrest—host of shows like American Idol and Wheel of Fortune—of unlawfully advertising ChumbaCasino.com, a platform she alleges is operating in violation of California’s gambling laws. Carillo asserts that Seacrest’s endorsement played a role in popularizing online gambling, exposing vulnerable groups, such as minors and individuals with gambling addictions, to harmful influences.
ChumbaCasino.com is operated by Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW), an Australian company established in 2012. Unlike conventional online casinos, Chumba uses a sweepstakes-based model. This format allows users to play with virtual currencies, and any monetary winnings are classified as sweepstakes prizes rather than traditional gambling payouts.
Legal Gray Area Around Sweepstakes Model
Although Carillo argues that Chumba violates California law, the legal environment surrounding sweepstakes casinos is not black and white. Chumba remains accessible in most U.S. states, including California, due to its model that skirts direct cash wagering by utilizing virtual “Gold Coins” and bonus “Sweeps Coins,” which can be redeemed for cash prizes.
This model has drawn increasing attention as sweepstakes casinos are expected to double in number over the next couple of years. However, the platform is restricted in several states, including Connecticut, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, and Washington. It also faces heightened scrutiny in locales such as New York.
In California, where online gambling with real money is prohibited, Chumba has managed to operate legally thanks to its sweepstakes structure.
Seacrest’s Involvement and Legal Response
Seacrest partnered with VGW in a 12-month promotional agreement launched in December 2023. While the financial terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed, the lawsuit seeks to halt the operation of ChumbaCasino.com in California and block Seacrest from earning any further income associated with the platform.
Sources close to the situation have dismissed the case as meritless. A Chumba spokesperson told TMZ that the company “operates its social casino in strict compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.” They emphasized that Seacrest is merely a brand ambassador and plays no part in the site’s operations.
“This lawsuit has no merit,” the spokesperson added. “Chumba will vigorously defend its legal right to operate its business. It’s unfortunate that Ryan Seacrest has been unfairly caught up in this case.”
