The New York Liberty’s 2024 WNBA championship victory is celebrated with a new public art installation by LaToya Ruby Frazier at Barclays Center. “The Liberty Portraits: A Monument to the 2024 Champions” features nine-foot-tall portraits of the players and their chosen families.
This installation, displayed on the Barclays Center plaza, marks Frazier’s first outdoor project. The double-sided portraits show players in uniform on one side and with their chosen families on the other. Frazier captured these images in locations meaningful to the players, including a trip to the Bahamas with Jonquel Jones and her family.
Each portrait contains a first-person testimony from a loved one chosen by the player, adding storytelling elements to the artwork. Inspired by the Statue of Liberty, the portraits honor female leadership, diversity, and a love of basketball and family.
Frazier states that the collaboration celebrates the full humanity of the championship players, aiming to connect fans with the team and highlight the power of sisterhood. BSE Global and Liberty Vice Chair and Governor Clara Wu Tsai will display Frazier’s work throughout the 2025 WNBA season.
The project initiates a tradition of showcasing temporary public art at the Barclays Center plaza. Esteemed art leaders have selected the next installation for the 2026 season. Wu Tsai plans to introduce new art inside Barclays Center as well.
