Initially, it didn’t seem like an intense competition for England’s prime No 10 spot. The first hour was uneventful, with Wembley drenched in a heavy, slow rain that felt like it capped the world. Much of the match seemed a dull affair, a World Cup qualifier with minimal impact on anything but Serbia’s fading hopes.
Ultimately, though, there was a sense of progress. Credit goes to Thomas Tuchel, who is currently thriving as England’s unconventional leader, member of the indifferent international management style.
