In an effort to economize during the World Cup event held in the US, Canada, and Mexico, the BBC plans to cover some matches remotely from Manchester.
The BBC has often been criticized for sending large teams to major events like the Glastonbury festival and the Olympics. Now, the broadcaster is under fire for its strategy to cover certain matches at the next summer’s World Cup remotely, aiming to reduce expenses.
The 2026 World Cup will be unprecedented in scale, taking place over three countries, across various time zones, and featuring 48 teams. To manage expenditures, the BBC is considering having TV commentators and analysts cover some less popular games from its Salford, Manchester base.
