On Sunday evening, Bayern Munich’s players gathered discreetly at a private upscale restaurant to celebrate their 33rd Bundesliga title (or 34th, if you count the 1932 championship before the league’s formal establishment). Unlike past title celebrations, this one felt subdued. The squad arrived in casual attire rather than on the pitch in their kits, as the title was secured off the field rather than with a decisive victory.
According to reports, the team watched the critical clash between Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen on a big screen at the venue. When Freiburg took the lead late in the first half—a result that would mathematically clinch the championship for Bayern—one player reportedly let out a frustrated “Scheiße!” The squad had hoped to seal the title themselves next weekend in their home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Instead, Bayern’s official claim to the title was delayed due to a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer by RB Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen in their 2-2 draw on Saturday, while Bayern’s star striker Harry Kane was sidelined due to suspension. On Sunday, Leverkusen also saw their hopes dashed in dramatic fashion, conceding a late equalizer in the fourth minute of added time against Freiburg. However, with the title now out of reach, the result held little meaning for Leverkusen beyond their battle for Champions League qualification.
This anticlimactic conclusion may well mark the end of one of the Bundesliga’s compelling recent rivalries, especially if Leverkusen undergoes a summer of change.
