Sheffield United climbed out of the Championship’s relegation zone with a 3-0 victory over 10-man Portsmouth, coinciding with their owners’ announcement of ambitions to reach the Premier League. Patrick Bamford, making his full debut for United, scored his first goal in 19 months by netting a rebound early in the second half. Sydie Peck had given the Blades a 1-0 lead at halftime with a penalty, his first senior goal for the club, after Portsmouth’s Terry Devlin received a red card for handballing on the goal line just before the break.
