The Baltimore Ravens will travel to Hard Rock Stadium to face the Miami Dolphins in Week 9 of the NFL season. Both teams are struggling going into this Thursday Night Football matchup and the Ravens are hoping that the return of their most important player will help them to turn things around. Before kickoff from Miami on Thursday night, continue reading to get my breakdown of this contest, including my Ravens vs Dolphins prediction.

  • Confidence: 3/5

Key Storylines

  • Lamar Jackson is expected to return to the Baltimore starting lineup after a hamstring injurry caused him to miss three games. His mobility and playmaking upgrade the Ravens’ offense immediately. But the question for Jackson and the Ravens will be whether or not he can stay on the field.
  • Both teams got wins last week to snap their own losing streaks. The Ravens beat the Chicago Bears to end a four-game slide, while the Dolphins ended a three-game losing streak with a win over the Atlanta Falcons. A second straight win in this game would be huge for the team that earns it and for the dwindling playoff hopes for either side.
  • The Ravens have yet to win a road game this season and will try to get their first win away from home here. Baltimore’s only true road games of the season came against the Bills and Chiefs. This is by far the most winnable road game they’ve had to this point in the season.

Quarterback Play

  • Baltimore: Lamar Jackson’s return changes the way the Ravens operate offensively. When healthy, he is an elite dual threat with the ability to generate explosive plays on the ground and with his arm. Baltimore struggled to move the ball for the most part when he was out. If he can stay healthy and on the field, they could turn their season around.
  • Miami: Tua Tagovailoa looked composed in the Week 8 win for Miami. He has been dealing with minor hip and thumb issues but is expected to play again this week. The Dolphins have done a nice job of getting Tagovailoa into situations where he can throw to De’Von Achane out of the backfield. That has helped make up for the loss of Tyreek Hill, though nothing can fully replace Hill’s production through the air.
  • Baltimore is 2-5 against the spread this season.
  • Miami is 4-4 against the spread on the year.
  • The Dolphins are 6-1-1 to the over when it comes to their totals this year.
  • Baltimore is 6-1 to the over through their first seven games.

Ravens vs Dolphins Model Projection

Score Projection: Baltimore Ravens 28 – Miami Dolphins 20

Win Probability: Baltimore Ravens 68%, Miami Dolphins 32%

Final Thoughts

Miami got a win last week, but I’m not sold on a win over the Kirk Cousins-led Falcons being the sign of a turnaround. The return of Lamar Jackson should help the Ravens to win big on Thursday night in Miami. As long as Jackson can stay on the field and isn’t compromised physically, I like the Ravens to win and cover the spread as a favorite on the road here.
