From his teenage years and throughout his military service, Andy Gallie struggled with gambling addiction. He successfully overcame it by dedicating himself to raising awareness about the issue.
One Man Who Realized Gambling Was His One True Love – and Who Changed That
Gambling was widespread on the military base where he served, with 40 to 50 fruit machines that “normalized gambling.” Gallie’s life was consumed by gambling, occupying him for hours daily and leading him to neglect responsibilities and relationships, which strained his personal life.
“Gambling was my one true love. I’d do anything to keep people away from my gambling. That included gaslighting and deflection,” he stated. His turning point was supporting others through the Armed Forces Gambling Support Network, directing his energy towards assisting those in need.
Gallie’s experience with gambling-related harm influenced many, and he began assisting others who later credited him with saving their lives. He aided individuals living with gambling addicts and those suffering from addiction.
For his efforts benefiting veterans and their families, Gallie became a finalist for the 2025 Soldiering On Awards in the Education, Training and Development Award category.
Addressing gambling issues in the military has been largely avoided, but more are now speaking out. Many veterans resort to gambling as an escape, to handle stress, or deal with conditions like PTSD.
Organizations like GambleAware emphasize the need to support vulnerable groups, including minorities, veterans, and the prison population in the UK, who are disproportionately affected by gambling-related harm.
