A 26-year-old Atalanta supporter was fatally stabbed during a violent altercation with Inter Milan fans in Bergamo, northern Italy, over the weekend, according to police reports.
Authorities stated that the clash broke out on Saturday night at a local pub after an Inter supporter allegedly made provocative chants, sparking tensions between the rival fan groups. Carmelo Beringheli, head of the carabinieri in Bergamo, confirmed the incident and its circumstances.
A male suspect in his late teens has been taken into custody in connection with the stabbing. The investigation is ongoing.
Atalanta’s head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, condemned the violence, calling it “completely unacceptable” and stressing that such events “must never happen again.” The tragic event has cast a shadow over both clubs and reignited calls for improved safety and security around football matches in Italy.
